ORIGINAL: After we'd used the Roborock S7+ in our home for a few days, my wife had the best description: "This is a game-changer." We have mostly wood floors with a few rugs, and ideally everything should be vacuumed or swept at least 3-4 times per week, but that's not realistic for us with our work and family schedules. With the Roborock, we can schedule daily cleaning for high traffic areas, and clean any area on demand when we see that it needs it.
For me the number one reminder of the benefit of the machine is this: when it does a scheduled run in a room that already looks clean to my eye, the dust compartment is full of dust and dog hair that would have stayed on the floor had we not had the Roborock.
PROS:
Proficient at picking up dirt. Good reach into corners and under furniture (it fits under our couches, which are 4.5 inches off the floor).
Good maneuver/obstacle logic that keeps it from getting stuck without causing it to miss areas as a result.
Intelligent room mapping and navigation, with ability to edit maps according to your needs. The benefit of mapping is 1) the robot can work in an efficient pattern based on knowledge of walls and furniture, and 2) if you manually move the robot to a room, it can scan the area and figure out where it is.
Very useful phone app that can be installed on multiple phones -- I'm generally not a fan of devices that require a phone but this one is working well (see wifi note in Cons section below).
Relatively quiet; I'd say similar noise level to a dishwasher, not as loud as a standard vacuum.
I'm going to express lukewarm support for the mopping feature. It's really more like wiping with a damp cloth. Certainly better than nothing, but if I hired someone to mop I'd probably give them a bit of side eye if they showed up with this.
CONS:
Dust bin on the robot is pretty small. During the first few cleanings I had to manually empty it a few times (not difficult) while cleaning a large room. But after the initial runs (when our house was CLEANER), we can rely on the auto-emptying in the dock. For reference, this morning I did our living room, dining room, and central hallway, and the bin was about 80% full when complete. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is no detection of the level of dust in the bin; you must pause cleaning and check it yourself if you think it might be full.
There is no way to send it back to the dock for emptying, then resume the cleaning job it's doing. Returning to the dock requires it to restart the cleaning job. The building blocks are all there to incorporate this into a future version of the app (with the current app you can pause and resume the cleaning, or you can stop the cleaning and send it back to the dock. There needs to be a combination of the two that will pause the job, return to the dock to empty, then resume the job). That said, there's an easy workaround for now: schedule cleanings by room, and stagger the times so it returns to the dock between each room or group of rooms.
This and any other home device requiring wifi access should be set up on a guest network to separate it from your computers and phones (most consumer routers can do this). Please note that Roborock is a Chinese company, and in China all companies cooperate with the government in the collection of data. This is a high-quality product that I recommend, but I'd prefer not to give them my home wifi password (the SSID and password are given to the robot during setup).
So day 1. It took 3 times to get my floor plan. The first time the vacuum just kind of gave up on finding the charger. Second time it got stuck on a carpet. Third time, no issues, and there hasn't been one since. I think it's possible that the extreme amount of dirt on the floor may have been the issue. I've been without a vacuum for a while now, and over the last few days this guy has picked up at least a fully bunny worth of dust bunnies. It has easily picked up more garbage than its actual size.
This means lots of having to empty the bin. One thing that sucks is that the vacuum doesn't tell you if the bin is full, at least not before it's so full that it can't shove more stuff into it. Eventually you'll get a low airflow warning but by then the bin is already packed. Luckily the bin is easy to remove, empty, and replace, and if you drop any dust the vacuum will just pick it back up! The brush get hair and such caught to it, but is very easy to remove for cleaning. The vacuum comes with a tool that has a razor to help cut the hairs, but it doesn't work well, not sure why. Regardless maintenance is very easy. Just keep an eye on that dust bin, it will fill quickly if you're not vacuuming often.
The vacuum has a mop, and it does mop. I mean it's not great, but it exists. The problem isn't the unit or the mop, it's just how mopping works. You know how sometimes you have to mop the same spot 5, 10, 20 times? The vacuum has to do the same thing, but it only covers the spot once per run because it doesn't have an eye for dirty floors. Nothing wrong with this. It's a nice addition and should be seen as such, and again, it does work for maintenance. There may also be a way to make it spin in circles over the area, but I haven’t tried this, guess that’s something to explore while on lockdown due to the virus.
The app is easy to set up and use and the mapping is awesome. I've used no tutorials and figured out how to make no mop zones. It was easy, I just moved furniture around to figure out where the sides of the rugs were. That's another thing, the vacuum adjusts to furniture moving. Even if it mapped out the furniture it'll map it back out after it's moved, cleaning without issue. This means something like my office where I may or may not be, and where my chair may be anywhere, gets a good cleaning. You can also send the vacuum to any specific room you want (or group of rooms), and designating rooms after it generates the map is easy. It did a good job at guessing the room layout to begin with, so not much adjusting necessary.
I’d say it’s worth getting. It does as good of a job as I do while vacuuming; suction isn’t an issue. The biggest problems you’re likely to face are making sure the bin isn’t full (which again once you’ve done your initial run isn’t much of a problem) and making sure it doesn’t try to destroy your house by grabbing low hanging stuff like a cloth covering furniture or something. Totally picks up pet hair, moves around with no real issue, it’s exactly what I’d hoped a robot vacuum could be. If I could change anything it would be to have the ability to set custom voices/sounds whenever it wants to say anything. It does have multiple voice packs, but I’d like to set my own voice rather than choose between different languages, and a few fun ones. The app downloads the voices so this should be possible. Also the app pushes notifications to you which is nice.
Anyway, worth it. Just need to find the correct googly-eyes to go with it.
Amazon has tons of options for furniture risers. I highly recommend you get some to let the bot get under the furniture where dust really collects. I'm still working on getting my furniture lifted. Keep your upright and carpet cleaner for big messes if you have kids or pets. I have a steam mop for my hardwood floor cleaning and carpet steamer for any accidents. But that's very rare with no pets or kids. I prefer not to introduce water into my Roborock Q8 Max+ even though it will mop floors. The mix of water and dust just doesn't sound like a good idea in this device, besides a very occasional steam mop of my hardwood floors and tile is no big deal. What's huge that the Roborock provides is getting all that darn dust up off the floor and out from under furniture. It's amazing how much dust can accumulate despite a newer house with good air filtration here in the northwest. I'm pushing 70 and I like a clean house, trust me, this is the ticket.
